North Cyprus declared its independence from the southern half of the island in 1983, nine years after a Greek Cypriot coup attempting to annex the island to Greece triggered a Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The Republic has received diplomatic recognition only from Turkey, on which it is dependent for economic, political and military support.
The isolation has caused hardship for the people of North Cyprus, but it has meant that it is one of the few gems of the Mediterranean which has been unspoiled by mass tourism.
